BYU's Hugh VanWagenen, right, tries to get past Ogden's Stephan Phillips during Saturday's soccer match on BYU's home field.
Shortly before the fireworks started at the Stadium of Fire, BYU generated some fireworks of its own against in-state rival Ogden Saturday night.
The Cougars scored two goals within four minutes of each other early in the second half to take a 2-0 lead and then held on for the win.
"It's a great win for us, for sure," said BYU coach Chris Watkins. "This is a very good team. They had some new players out here tonight that we hadn't seen before."
Those new players included Bret Shimizu, who plays for Stanford, and James Jaramello, a local player going to UCLA who played most of his high school career at Mountain View High School.
BYU's Morgan Gilliam scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the 52nd minute. Off a corner kick, Justin Norton kicked it to wide-open Gilliam 25 yards out in front of the goal, right in the middle of the field. Gilliam took advantage of the defense, which was packed tight into the box, and kicked it into the top right corner of the goal.
In the 56th minute, BYU's Brady Marshall was fouled inside the box. Brock Trejo kicked the resulting penalty kick into the upper right corner of the goal for the 2-0 lead.
BYU and Ogden had played two games prior to Saturday night's contest and the Cougars had come out on top both times 1-0.
So it was no surprise that the score was even at 0-0 at the end of the first half."With all the injuries we have, I was really happy we got a win today," said Watkins. "I thought we were really organized and smart with the ball tonight."
With the win, the Cougars (9-3-1) will maintain their first-place position in the Northwest Division of the PDL. The Outlaws drop to 4-5-2 and are still fighting for a playoff spot.
